We live in a world where urban environments are cyclically shifting - both socially and in their built form - yet the architecture is not designed for an equal dynamicism. As our digital world has grown more interconnected, our physical environments have become increasingly detached from their initial design intention. With the boundaries between physical and digital realities fading, cyber-networks and virtual tenancies have created physical vacancies along once vibrant streets. When considering an entity that adapts to this hybrid, digi-physical world, one looks to the past for inspiration.
For thousands of years and across many cultures, the table has been a symbol of gathering and collective experience. The inward-facing orientation of their traditional linear or radial design orients the users for introspective interaction and connection. While creating a return to home at an urban scale, the iconography of “table” is reimagined and supersized from a dormant piece of furniture to a nomadic entity. Acting as a catalyst for individual and collective reflection, a physical and digital toolbox is deployed ephemerally, denoting place for collective dialogue in interstitial spaces.
