Over thousands of years, the roof has evolved through a wide range of geometric expressions and increasing complexity, yet it has consistently remained a universal symbol of gathering and shelter. From simple fabric coverings stretched over primitive dwellings to highly sophisticated parametric forms, the roof plays a critical role in defining a structure’s silhouette. Each form adapts to specific spatial and performance needs while also reflecting the social and cultural traditions of its time.
Tectiform Haus draws inspiration from the simple yet dramatic rooflines of traditional German residential architecture. Characterized by steep pitches and extended overhangs, these structures embody a delicate balance between structural efficiency and artistic expression. The home references these formal qualities while abstracting the geometry of the iconic American A-frame, creating a hybrid architecture that feels both historically grounded and forward-looking.
Rather than relying on expansive windows or elaborate formal gestures, the front facade allows the roofline itself to become the defining architectural expression. A circular cutout denotes a place of entry, while a wood and glass screen system allow for filtered views of the life inside.
The home’s A-frame timber roof structure not only grounds the architecture aesthetically, but also frees the interior plan from the need for additional structural supports. This creates flexible layouts and expansive open spans that allow spaces to overlap and flow dynamically into one another. Rather than relying on solid exterior walls, slender columns wrap the south and east facades of the home and are infilled with large picture windows that frame expansive views of the surrounding landscape. The gridded rhythm of the structural piers establishes an underlying logic for the interior spaces while allowing the roof to take on a more fluid, geometric expression along the rear facade.
